Our Surgical Services Department is comprised of three Operating Room Suites, three Procedure Rooms, one Endoscopy Suite, and preparation and recovery areas.
Our Scope of Services includes general surgery, advanced minimally invasive procedures, orthopedics, urology, obstetrics & gynecology, general/minor vascular, opthalmology, dental, podiatry, plastics, ENT, comprehensive breast care, endoscopy and ERCP.
Services for general, regional and local anesthetics, as well as moderate sedation are offered. Available to our surgical department to meet the needs of every patient are laboratory, x-ray, laser, and pathology services.
Surgical Services are provided either as an inpatient or as an outpatient, and a waiting area is provided for those accompanying patients to their procedure.

Our Surgical Services team members are trained and experienced in the nature of their work and are dedicated to providing the best patient care experience. This team reports directly to the VP of Patient Care Services.
Our multi-disciplinary team includes physicians/surgeons, anesthesia providers, PAs, RNs, RNFAs, surgical technicians, and other assistive personnel.
Under the direction of the Director and Manager of Surgical Services are qualified personnel cross-trained in multiple surgical disciplines.

When scheduling procedures/surgical interventions, the following information needs to be included at minimum: Patient’s name, admission status, age/date of birth, pre-operative diagnosis, operation to be performed, the surgeon, the assistant, type of anesthetic requested, and anticipated length of time needed for the operation.
Physicians fill out a Pre-Admission Testing/Registration/Surgery Boarding Form to schedule.
The following admission status categories will be used when scheduling operations:
- Inpatient (IP): The patient is admitted to the hospital the day the surgery is to be performed.
- Outpatient (OP): The patient is admitted and discharged the same day as surgery.

Pre-Admission Testing (PAT) occurs in the registration area inside the main lobby of the Hospital. PAT interviewers are located in a first floor office adjacent to the Radiology Department.
These specially trained nurses perform a detailed assessment of a patient before surgery, and provide education about what each patient should do to prepare for his/her procedure. The PAT nurse also coordinates the pre-surgical tests and diagnostics ordered by the physicians.
Some patients may participate in a telephone interview with a PAT nurse rather than a face-to-face interview.

Anesthesia Services at Otsego Memorial Hospital are integrated within the Surgical Services department and provide anesthesia services for elective and emergent surgeries. Anesthesia care is provided throughout the hospital by licensed and qualified practitioners under the policies and procedures approved by the medical staff. On-Call services are available 24 hours/day, 7 days/week. Other anesthesia services include: labor epidurals, blood patches, spinal taps, post-op pain management, and some chronic pain procedures.
Peri-Anesthesia Services (Pre/Post-Op)
Peri-Anesthesia Services maintains 22 beds, with the primary focus on providing nursing care and education to patients undergoing surgery, therapeutic procedures, and diagnostic testing.
Upon arrival, patients check in with Patient Registration and proceed to the second floor of the Hospital. A waiting room is available on the second floor for family and caregivers.
The needs of the family and/or caregiver are also assessed and interventions are taken to meet those needs. Referrals, both internal and external, for services such as home care, physical therapy, and durable medical equipment are made based on patient assessment/need.
Our Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) is a 4-bed unit, that provides quality nursing care for the post-operative patient. The goal of our PACU is to provide a comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients, and to provide optimal assistance to anesthesia providers and surgeons in meeting the healthcare needs of our patients.
Our PACU is staffed by ACLS certified registered nurses who demonstrate competency in perianesthesia nursing.

Central Services’ primary focus is to prepare and sterilize instrumentation. This involves cleaning, disinfecting, reassembling and sterilizing items for use in the operating room, ancillary Hospital departments, and OMH physician offices. Each item is properly labeled and sterilization is validated prior to distribution to departments.
