Adult Acute Hyperkalemia

Effective Tuesday, Dec. 12, a system-wide Adult Hyperkalemia PowerPlan will go live at all Cerner hospitals.

This PowerPlan, used in ED and inpatient settings, includes a subphase for use when ordering insulin and dextrose. This subphase, already used at Munson Medical Center, includes standard blood glucose monitoring post administration, as well the nursing hypoglycemia treatment protocol in the event a hypoglycemic reaction occurs.

The new PowerPlan also contains an updated reference including the 2018 KDIGO algorithm for management of severe hyperkalemia (K+ >6.5 mmol/L or 6-6.5 mmol/L with ECG changes).
